I have this little application that I wanted to populate a TreeView from a Dataset. Thanks Monkeyboy, long time no talk. Just trying to get this to work. Work Smarter Not Harder Well I finally got it to work. Below are all the sites I went to trying to get that code to work as well as to install an SQL Server 2008 Express database and the SQL Server Management Studio. And then a connection string that would actually work.

I downloaded the Northwind database example first and installed that. Then I downloaded SQL Server 2008 Express and the SP1 for it but that is not the correct method for doing that apparently. I also downloaded SP2 and SP3. I don't believe any of that needs to be done. I think you should follow the steps in the link 'Step-by-Step: Installing SQL Server Management Studio 2008 Express after Visual Studio 2010' which I finally did.

Everytime I attempted to run the SQL Server 2008 Express install it would eventually bring up the 'SQL Server Installation Center' window which I didn't know jack on what to do until I found the link that wrote. After that I had SQL Server 2008 Express installed. However I don't seem to be able to update it with any of the other service packs (or maybe it is updated but the rev doesn't display it) though. Also I couldn't get the connection string shown in the code to work. As I can't seem to add a connection type for that connection string. As you can see in the 4th image below the SQL Server Configuration Manager errors out and will not work. I was unable to find resolution for that even after reviewing probably 30 different threads on how to resolve it.

So I went with a connection string that apparently the SQL Server Management Studio uses. Anyhow I did use SQL Server Management Studio to attach and detach the Northwind database (as required in the link 'Converting the Northwind database file for Visual Studio 2012' I believe) in my 'C: SQL Server 2000 Sample Databases' directory. It's called Northwnd rather than Northwind for some reason. Possibly because I do have a different Northwind database already on my system from somewhere or another. I think I spent about 12 hours or a bit more trying to get this to work yesterday and last night. But it works with the exception that I can not provide a different connection type to the database for some reason and the SQL Server Configuration Manager will not work for reasons unknown. Possibly because the SQL Server 2008 Express is not updated to service pack 3 which is the latest for the Express version.

Hi Experts, This would be a Windows Application using VB.NET, XML. There is no database involved as of now. I have a treeview control which shows the tree of.

And Windows Update isn't updating it. But maybe it is updated for all I know when it was installed. Thanks Monkeyboy, long time no talk. Just trying to get this to work.
