There's a lot that's been done, and is going on in the Z32 tuning world. Socketing an ECU (pulling the eprom and installing a socket so that the eprom can be replaced easily) isn't hard. I've done many.

I also know several people that tune have eprom burners to be able to burn the tune and install. There's also the option of a microcontroller type device that emulates an eprom but can be reprogrammed on the fly, or can switch maps based on an external input.
